We actually asked this question to Astronaut Dan Tani during the STS-133 NASA Tweetup. He was kind enough to speak to us on launch day when Discovery had complications and wasn't able to launch.

Astronaut Tani stated that it was so hard to receive the news of his mother's passing in Space, but said the news wouldn't have been easier to hear on the ground.
He stated that it did hurt him to not be able to be there for his family. It was a distraction. But he also stated that it brought his team together in a unified way that he couldn't describe AND he stated that he couldn't fathom returning home to hear that it had happened and everyone went through it without telling him. He was able to communicate with his family quite a bit (now that technology advancements have made this possible) and the support and encouragement he received from his colleagues on ISS was so inspiring - he thinks of their support often.

Being a self-professed geek myself, I appreciate this post and I agree that this is a great way to engage our youth and to inspire them to achieve. Too much mediocrity has crept into Gen Y, Z, Millenials or whatever the latest descriptor is. I think I will look into judging a local contest! Thanks for the suggestion.

It should bother a lot of people. Generally whoever can create the best space hardware can also create the best nuclear weapons and systems to deliver them (rockets and missles). Since the cold war ended, we have been almost blind in the US to the possibility that another nation could catch or surpass us technologically. Unless things change in the next 5 to 10 year, I would suggest we all brush up on our Chinese Language skills.

Hi, it's just me. Thought I would leave my snarky, non-medical comments on this one.

It does not surprise me that there is muscle loss, bone loss and radiation problems with long term space flight. My possible solution would be to put the astronauts inside what basically amounts to a giant salad spinner. Once on their way, the crew would be spun up to a 1 g. environment (less if research proves less g's would be effective). They would be spun down before reaching their destination.
I am sure the centerfuge/gyroscopic effect would be helpful in other systems like life support and guidance.
Of course, speaking as a non-space professional, I am probably way off the mark.
